IELTS Writing Task 2 Band 8.5

Online learning effectiveness

The question

Some people think online courses are just as effective as traditional classroom learning. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Sample answer

The proliferation of online courses has prompted debate over whether they can match the educational outcomes of traditional classroom instruction. While I agree that online learning rivals in-person teaching for many forms of knowledge acquisition, I would argue that it falls short in areas that depend on direct human interaction.

On one hand, well-designed online courses offer notable advantages. Recorded lectures allow learners to revisit difficult material at their own pace, and platforms such as Coursera and edX make world-class instruction accessible to students in rural Uzbekistan as easily as in London. Furthermore, the flexibility of online study is especially valuable to working adults, who would otherwise be unable to pursue further education at all.

On the other hand, certain dimensions of learning are harder to replicate online. Spontaneous classroom discussion, lab experiments, peer collaboration and the mentorship that develops between teacher and student all rely on physical co-presence. Subjects requiring nuanced feedback — performing arts, clinical training, or oral language practice — can suffer when reduced to a video feed.

In conclusion, online learning has matured into a credible alternative for a wide range of subjects, particularly those centred on information transfer. However, claiming it is fully equivalent to classroom education overstates the case; the best modern systems combine both modes, exploiting the strengths of each.
